Why can't movies/TV be realistic like this? Stupid MPAA, you can't even say the word abortion in movies anymore. :(

Anyway! I can't wait for this thing! I almost don't want read any more pages cause I wanna be surprised! :eager:

i was trying to think of a movie/show/whatever that discusses things like this with this type of tone, but i couldn't, heh. i'm sure there MUST be, though, right?? there have to be filmmakers tackling these kinds of topics, there's so much stuff that i haven't seen so maybe it's out there? :hmm:

anyway, i hope the book doesn't disappoint!! :fear:

I just watched a documentary on the MPAA... that's where I learned that... there's plenty of filmmakers that want to do films about this type of thing, but they can't get their films either approved by the ratings system, or they have to edit stuff out to get them put in theaters. It's a a really interesting film, you should watch it! It's called "This Film is Not Yet Rated"

And you could never disappoint me, Ross ;)

oh yeah, i heard that was good! i should check that out. i thought of some movies that deal with abortion, though: Juno, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Black Christmas (the original), Citizen Ruth (which is more of a satirical comedy), and 4 Months 3 Weeks & 2 Days which is pretty intense. so it does happen, people do make films that deal with this stuff! i couldn't think of any TV shows but i don't really watch TV, but i'm sure there must be something.

aw! i COULD disappoint you, you never know!!!!!! :fear::fear::fear::fear::fear::fear::fear:

I think they hint at it in some movies, but the point the documentary tried to make was they couldn't actually go out and say the word "abortion." I think the last movie that did was Fast Times, and that came out in '83 :( I remember Juno showing that as an option in the movie, I'm just not sure if they actually say the word or not :\ It's like our country's going backwards, honestly.

~and never!! :XD:

"abortion" is said in Black Christmas but that was in 1974, and also Canadian so i wonder if that makes a difference. it's said a bunch of times in Citizen Ruth but that was 1996, and i know it's said at least once in Juno which was 2007. i can't remember if they say it in 4 Months 3 Weeks & 2 Days which is also from 2007, but there's an entire scene where a gut-wrenching illegal abortion takes place, but that movie is Romanian so they probably have their own MPAA thing there.

i did some more research and there's Cider House Rules (1999) and High Fidelity (2000). but yeah, definitely a tiny number and not much recent stuff at all, regardless! it's only gotten more and more of a hot topic in the last several years, and it's hard to remember that the most recent i can find is stuff from 2007 which was almost 6 years ago at this point.

AND i also remembered the 1986 The Fly, Geena Davis says abortion multiple times in that and there's even an abortion scene but which of course ends up with a giant fly larva instead! :XD:

I love this page a lot! I think i tried to comment on it on the Wet Moon online blog itself, but apparently the site ate my comment.
I never cared too much about Penny in the comic, but the way her character's been developing lately made her even more tridimensional and interesting, especially this page. I mean, she's a character who many other comic artists would have depicted very badly- mostly, she's very... Independent, i guess. She takes her own decisions and she's aware of what she's doing, and even her not being too emotional adds to the uniqueness of the character. I just really like this page, heh. And i'm rambling.

well, she's very independent and sexually active. I don't wanna sound like i'm generalizing, but from what i've seen it wouldn't be surprising to see a character like her treated in a way that revolves more around her relationships/encounters with men rather than her as a person. I don't know if i'm explaining myself well :'D

ah, i see what you mean. i agree, and i think maybe Penny would be portrayed as a "slut" or she'd have an arc where she settles down with one man or something crappy like that, because god forbid a woman just enjoy sex with multiple people or whatever.
