SHADOWEYES UNMASKED outfits by mooncalfe SHADOWEYES UNMASKED outfits by mooncalfe
some outfits for SHADOWEYES 3!

it really slows me down when i have to come up with outfits on the fly when i'm drawing a comic, so i like to make up outfits ahead of time. it took me several books before i started doing this, partly because i was much less particular and meticulous about the fashion in my earlier work, but over the years i started spending way too much time making up outfits. if i came to a scene and i didn't have an idea for an outfit, it would grind me to a halt so i had to figure something else out.

for Wet Moon i don't do drawings like these, i use photos or snippets of photos as starting points. but for Shadoweyes since it's futuristic i like to make them up myself.

i usually don't use every outfit in a book, sometimes they spill over into the next book, or don't get used at all, or get combined. anyway, here are Kyisha, Noah, and Sparkle (characters not to scale!).

Wow, where did you learn to create this sort of thing? Do you study fashion magazines?

hmmm, not really, no, i just make them up and do what i think looks good!

i do pay attention to fashion in real life though, not magazines, like people on the street, what people are wearing day-to-day, and then with that foundation it's easy to spice it up into this fantasy/futuristic kind of attire. :)

That makes sense. I've been watching your dA account for quite some time now, and how you manage to dress your characters in a way unique to each of them without repeating the same outfit (outside of a scene/situation) never ceases to inspire. Carry on!

Something about off the shoulder for all is just so alluring and you do it so well.

This is a smart idea! i think i will steal it. Designing outfits is like my least favorite part about creating characters/comics. Id put everyone in a t-shirt and jeans if i could get away with it.
Also what fantastic outfits. if you ever decide to go into fashion design i think you'd have legions of little punk girls clamoring for your fashions. ;)

#11 lol

i both love designing outfits and hate it! i hate it because it's so time-consuming for me and sometimes tough coming up with good ones, but i love it because it's super fun when it works out.

which #11 are you lol'ing about?? there are 3 of them! :XD:

Damn, where does Kyisha get those insane two toned clothes? Somehow I picture Noah and Kyisha going shopping together and then going back to Noah's house so they can cut the shirts into quarter shirts for Noah haha. And then Noah is all like 'No, baby, you gotta make it look like it's ripped!' Haha no, that probably never happens. I just like to think of serious characters doing silly stuff :P

Before you started posting these, I thought I was the only one this anal-retentive when it came to character design. ;) I must say, your outfits have taken some of my characters outfits in new directions.
To date, my favourite outfit of your devising is still Naga's "sharka," from Mountain Girl. =)

That's cool! Aside from the obvious silhouette cues, I could actually tell right away which outfits were designed for which character. Kyisha always ends up looking like a Fly Girl from In Living Color!

This is exceptionally cool, bro. It reminds me of what we should see in more video games. Imagine going through an RPG that actually had the character change outfits. And I'm not talking about GTA or Saint's Row style mix'n'match. I mean the game desiners and art directors plan their outfits in advance and have it used as an expression of a character's personality, current mood, environmental factors (Winter clothes for Ice worlds, COME ON PEOPLE) and special events.
The tech is there, we should see more of this kind of variety and character expression.

totally agree with you man, I first noticed that when I got to mount gagazet in FFX and everyone was freezing. I'd really like to see a rpg in the future do this try changing outfits like this.

I love number 4 and 7 for Sparkle, she looks cool in leggings and I love the knee holes. Ahh and number 12 is so cute too! 3 and 10 of Noah look cool, and number 6 of Kyisha is swish (gotta love high waisted trousers)

So all in all this is awesome!

There's some really great stuff there, liking the asymmetry, squares and stripes.
I've never gone this far for fashion design, though i rarely illustrate costumed crime-fighters . . .
